Title: The exploration of physical health as a component of wellness

Abstract: "The overall purpose of this research was to identify the role and contribution of physical health to wellness. A cross-sectional design was employed to conduct three studies related to the over all purpose. The subjects were 243 employees of a local health care facility, aged 24-72. The Perceived Wellness Survey (PWS), including physical, psychological, social, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional subscales, was used to measure wellness, and both survey and biomedical measures were used to assess physical health. In study one, convergent validity of the physical and psychological subscales was demonstrated, and all of the subscales were found to significantly relate to wellness (r =.60 to.78, p $<$.01) and to physical health (r =.35 to.51, p $<$.01). The strongest correlate of both wellness and physical health was psychological health.

In study two, the relationships among perceived, objective and functional physical health were examined, with significant relationships found in each case. Perceived and functional physical health were most strongly related (r =.32, p $<$.01). Also, perceived physical health (r =.56, p $<$.01) and two activity measures in the objective category (r = $-.20$,.21, p $<$.01) were found to be significantly related to overall wellness. Multiple activity measures (overall, leisure time activity excluding sport, and work) were used in study three to examine the relationship between activity quantity and wellness, and the Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire (OEQ) was used as an indicator of quality of exercise. More leisure activity was related to greater wellness and psychological health, while higher physical health was found in individuals with more overall activity. The OEQ was not related to overall wellness, but greater physical and intellectual health were identified in those with higher obligatory scores, and for those defined as obligatory exercisers (OEQ $\ge$ 50, N = 52), a negative relationship with social health was identified (r = $-.30$, p $<$.05).

The results provide support for a multidimensional model of wellness including physical health, but in which other factors also contribute significantly. The importance of the tridimensional model of physical health is discussed, as well as evidence supporting the adoption of a moderate level of regular physical activity."
