Title: A Subject Analysis of Greek Language Books Printed Between 1474 and 1669

Abstract: This study examines an important part of Greek history: the Greek book production as it was reflected through the social, political, religious, economic and cultural framework of the era 1474-1669, under the particular historical conditions that were created by the Turkish occupation in the Greek peninsula and the consequent Greek migration. It also aims at presenting the impact of the book itself in the shaping of Greek culture and literacy among the Greeks in exile and in Greece itself as well as the two way interaction between book and culture, culture and book.

Particular emphasis is given to the specific issues that arose from the censorship of the Roman Inquisition and the relations of the two Churches: Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, in order to examine the religious framework within which the Greek book was developed. In addition the economic aspect of the book--one of the major elements that shaped the presses as enterprises and outlined the characteristics of the book as a commodity--is examined.
