A study of children who have completed grade one Abstract: An exploratory, descriptive study of the retention of reading skills in children who have completed grade one. Thirty-eight children were asked ten times over the summer between their first and second grade year to respond to a checklist of possible activities they may have done on a given day. An overall response rate of 77.1 percent was achieved. Reading levels at the beginning and the end of the study were compared to determine retention or loss of reading skills. Activities, gender and age variables were run on a regression analysis to determine which may have influenced retention or loss of reading skills. Reading activities over the summer were done in nearly equal percentages of children in both the maintained and lost skills groups. "Making stuff" seemed to correlate with the retention of reading skills. Perhaps with a larger sample, reading a book and using the computer would also have correlated with skill retention. Boys did not seem to have a greater tendency to lose reading skills than girls. In this small sample, youngest children did better at retaining their skills than did their oldest classmates. Children who are six and seven responded to queries about their lives and did so with clarity and honesty. The checklist for gathering data was found to be quite comprehensive. A fuller picture of children's lives away from the school setting has been filled in. |
