Title: IMPLICATIONS OF TEACHER'S COGNITIVE STYLE FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPUTERS IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS

Abstract: Information technology provides education with the opportunity to develop a new instructional delivery system comprised of human-computer-based information systems. The success of such systems depends, in part, on the individual teacher's implementation of computers. This study explores a hypothesized link between teacher's cognitive style and the implementation of computers in middle schools. The construct of cognitive style examined is that of field dependence/independence, operationally defined by the Embedded Figures Test (EFT). Twelve uses of computers in middle schools are considered. Specific sub-hypotheses relating to the effect of cognitive style on these uses were made. The EFT and a survey research questionnaire were administered to ninety-seven middle school teachers from fourteen school districts. Analysis of variance, chi-square, and multiple regression used to test the hypotheses. It was found that cognitive style did affect the implementation of computers, but that teacher's sex and the socioeconomic status of the community also had an effect on implementation.
