Abstract: The primary goal of this study was to determine the relationships of medical school librarians' socioeconomic background, occupational characteristics and educational attainment to their involvement in professional activities, defined as continuing education, participation in professional associations, publishing and research. This investigation was an attempt to increase medical school librarians' awareness of their professionalism and of the responsibilities they have as professionals. Involvement in professional activities was viewed as an important characteristic of a professional and was believed to serve as an indication of medical school librarians' commitment to professionalism and to improving the status of librarianship. It was hypothesized that medical school librarians': (1) involvement in professional activities would be related significantly to their socioeconomic background, occupational characteristics and educational attainment but that educational attainment would be more related to their involvement in professional activities. |
