Title: THE RELATIONSHIPS OF SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUND, OCCUPATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT TO THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF MEDICAL SCHOOL LIBRARIANS

Abstract: The primary goal of this study was to determine the relationships of medical school librarians' socioeconomic background, occupational characteristics and educational attainment to their involvement in professional activities, defined as continuing education, participation in professional associations, publishing and research. This investigation was an attempt to increase medical school librarians' awareness of their professionalism and of the responsibilities they have as professionals. Involvement in professional activities was viewed as an important characteristic of a professional and was believed to serve as an indication of medical school librarians' commitment to professionalism and to improving the status of librarianship. It was hypothesized that medical school librarians': (1) involvement in professional activities would be related significantly to their socioeconomic background, occupational characteristics and educational attainment but that educational attainment would be more related to their involvement in professional activities.

Data were gathered by a mail questionnaire sent to a random sample of 500 medical school librarians. Four hundred and forty-seven questionnaires were returned, representing an 89 percent response rate. Based on the eligibility criteria, findings were based upon data from 410 librarians who indicated participation in professional activities from 1979 to 1981.

The data revealed that continuing education and publishing activities were not related significantly to socioeconomic background, educational attainment or occupational characteristics. However, participation in professional associations and research were found to be related significantly to the independent variables. Results showed that occupational characteristics were more related to professional activities. The measures of occupational characteristics had the strongest impact on professional activities were total years of experience, experience in health science libraries and salary. Overall, socioeconomic background factors and educational attainment had little influence on professional activities.
