Title: Contrasts of teacher ideal and actual beliefs about mathematics understanding: Three case studies
Abstract: "The purpose of this study was to compare each middle school teacher's ideal and actual beliefs about understanding. Ideal beliefs are convictions of how the teacher ideally would like to teach for understanding and ideally would like the students to learn. Actual beliefs are convictions of how the teacher actually needs to teach and how students actually need to learn within the contextual factors of the classroom.
Three experienced female middle school teachers were selected from an inservice mathematics education course that emphasized teaching for understanding. Daily observations, daily interviews, and three questionnaires were the primary sources for inferring the teacher's beliefs. The teachers were observed for approximately three weeks and were given frequent opportunity to respond to my analysis of their beliefs.
The distinction between relational and instrumental understanding was used to illustrate how the teachers were teaching for concept development, how they were teaching for a procedural development, and how students were learning mathematics.
The findings of the study were that teachers may hold ideal clusters of beliefs about understanding very different from their actual clusters of beliefs. Several contextual factors kept the teachers from incorporating their ideal beliefs in the classroom: how they learned mathematics, how they had been teaching mathematics, their students' background and goals for learning mathematics, standardized tests, administrative demands, textbooks, and time."
