Title: How the architectural style of the home relates to family television viewing

Abstract: "This dissertation re-examines the television audience in relation to the particular architectural style of each family's home. Specifically, an architectural theory of component living within the traditional or transitional home style served as the framework for understanding the physical environment in which families view television.

A qualitative methodology was used for the study, incorporating a grounded theory approach to investigate how the architectural style of the home related to families' television viewing behavior. This discovery-oriented approach allowed for an avenue to bridge environmental psychology and architectural theory with mass communication research.

Twenty families for a total of 61 people were interviewed within the naturalistic environment of the particular family's home. In addition, photographs were taken of each room that housed a television set in order to document the location of the set and the style of the home. The criteria for interviewing a family were: that both spouses lived at the home, that the couple had children (although they did not have to live at the house), were home owners and lived in a detached single-family house, and that they had more than one television.

The study argues that those living in traditional homes use their televisions to retreat away from other members of the family, and to retreat away from the pressures of the world. Those living in transitional homes, however, use their televisions as a magnet for their family. Traditional home owners, therefore, viewed television more intensely and more often individually than transitional home owners. In addition, it was discovered that when traditional home owners did view television with other family members, it occurred in the master bedroom, the most private living component in the home. Transitional home owners, however, viewed in the family room or great room, the most community-oriented room in the home."
