Title: A methodology for the representation of requirements specifications for large-scale systems using multimedia techniques

Abstract: When requirements specifications are developed for large-scale systems, the final specification is usually a transformation of the original requirements data into a text-based form that is often foreign to end-users. Often, the problem is that the specification is written in the language of engineers, in terms of the structure or architecture of the technologies that will comprise the solution to the problem. This makes it difficult for users to validate that the specification accurately represents their requirements for an automated system. This research presents and validates a method for representing functional requirements that will result from presenting specifications in user accessible language through the use of electronic multimedia documentation. This documentation is capable of showing users a representation of requirements and requirements data that is more representative of their real-world problem than traditional requirements specifications. This research demonstrates how multimedia exhibits, notably the results of throw-away rapid prototyping activities and animated simulation, can be incorporated into a multimedia requirements specification. To examine the relative effectiveness of the methodology, we developed a multimedia requirements specification based on an existing text specification for a real-world system. Using the methodology, multimedia requirements exhibits were added by way of hypermedia links which stakeholders then accessed to obtain clarification or assistance regarding a particular system requirement. This research demonstrated that the methodology, which we used to construct multimedia specifications, was effective in increasing the perceived understandability of the specification over that obtained from the text specification alone for novice groups which were similar to the test group.
