Title: The Retrieval of Information Using Natural-Language: A Problem of Data-Structuring and Language

Abstract: This thesis describes a system and a methodology for the computer understanding of English. The system, entitled- "Natural Language Processing" (NLP_, answers questions, execute commands, and accepts information to understand questions and statements about the Ohio driver's manual. It combines a complete syntactic analysis of each sentence with a semantic converter in deciding what a sentence means.

It is based on the belief that a computer cannot deal reasonably with language unless it can understand the subject it is discussing. The system is given a multi-level hierarchical set of grammatical rules, semantic relation-event-event forms, and a theorem prover, to aid in its understanding of English. The syntactic, semantic and inference (theorem prover) components are integrated with the other parts to understand and to answer English questions posed to the system.
