Title: The managerial roles of academic library directors : an application of the Mintzberg model
Abstract: This study examines the internal and external managerial roles of academic library directors based on a model of developed by Henry Mintzberg. External managerial roles include Figurehead, Liaison, Monitor, Spokesperson, and Negotiator. Internal managerial roles include Leader, Disseminator, Entrepreneur, Disturbance Handler, and Resource Allocator. Differences in managerial roles are investigated in terms of a number of institutional and individual variables. The work-contacts of academic library directors are studied as a follow-up to the analysis of managerial role. Data was collected by means of a two-page questionnaire which was mailed to 126 academic library directors in the New England states. Responses from 97 directors formed the basis of the study. Seventy-one percent of the respondents were from colleges and 30% from universities 1 73% were from private institutions and 27% from public ones. Analysis of response indicated that directors were primarily involved with internal roles: three times the number of directors responded "least" involved with external roles than with internal roles and almost three times the number of directors were "most" involved in internal roles than with external ones. The work-contacts of respondents were also primarily internal in orientation, with almost half of the directors spending 50% or more of their time with subordinates. Institutional and individual variables made a significant difference on response for only a few of the ten managerial roles.
