Title: University library administration in a developing country : Universidad Centroamericana of Nicaragua; a case study

Abstract: This case study reports the observations made during a six-month period at the Biblioteca CArlos Cuadra Pasos of the Universidad Centroamericana in Managua, Nicaragua. As a result of these observations, twenty problem areas have been identified. The most important are: lack of professional librarians, indaequate facilities, outdated classification schemes, absence of a national bibliography, lack of periodical indexes, and climate and preservation problems. These problem areas could prove useful as a checklist for university libraries in other developing countries. Tentative solutions to these problem areas have been offered. Some have been tried. A preliminary evaluation tends to confirm the hypothesis that university libraries in developing countries must become self-contained units while efforts continue to set up viable national programs and networks.
