Title: Information needs of academic medical scientists at Chulalongkorn University

Abstract: The information needs of scientists in English- speaking countries have been extensively reported in the literature of library and information science. However, few studies, publicly available in English, have investigated information needs of scientists in developing countries and no study has examined the information needs of scientists, particularly medical scientists in developing Asian countries. This study investigates the information needs of . academic medical scientists in Thailand. It identifies research-related work situations involving information needs; information providers used by medical scientists; and establishes. the use and/or nonuse of libraries as information providers. Academic medical scientists included in this study are those holding faculty position at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. Data has been gathered through a self-administered questionnaire. The result of the study indicates that medical scientists have information needs arising from three important research related situations; identifying up- to-date information; receiving relevant studies/data; and finding research topics. The finding reveals a high use of the library as an information provider. Overwhelmingly, medical scientists identified "library on campus" as the provider of greatest benefit. They also frequently consult experts and other colleagues in the profession. The majority of medical scientists are library users. The reason for using the library most frequently identified is that library has what is needed. Formal publications, particularly journal articles, indexes and abstracts are the major sources of information. Finally, it is evident that Thai medical scientists rely heavily on information from abroad. Library services such as online search service and interlibrary loan, are mostly recognized as important services because they provide access to broader information resources, not limited to those available within the country or the institution.
