Title: The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) 1999 grade 4 language arts results, library media center staffing, and flexible scheduling : a research study

Abstract: This study examines the relationship between two components of an elementary school library media program. These components are: (1) grade 4 MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) Language Arts test results and the staffing of elementary school library media centers with certified personnel, and (2) grade 4 MCAS Language Arts test results and flexible scheduling in school library media centers. The investigator analyzed the data by using a regression model with MCAS scores as the response variable. After controlling for the percentage of students qualifying for free lunch, the effect of media center staffing and flexible scheduling on the grade 4 MACS Language Arts test results was positive, but weak. This marginal benefit suggests that case studies might be a better way to provide more insight into library media programming for an elementary school.
