Title: The communication pattern of the library middle manager in traditional and participative academic library hierarchies, an inquiry

Abstract: This study investigates the communication pattern of middle 'managers in two medium-to-large academic libraries. Of specific interest are the differences. if any, that exist between the communication pattern of middle managers in a traditional. hierarch- ical environment and the communication pattern of middle managers in a similar environment which also has a participatory influence. A participatory approach to• management places new demands on all members of the organization; such demands are, for example, more awareness of, and involvement with the total organization. It seems plausible that differences in the communication pattern will at- tend such an approach. Because of their central position in the hierarchy, middle managers are suitable for a study of communication patterns. Furthermore, middle managers are often overlooked in the study of organizations even though their importance as a vital link between upper and lower echelons is acknowledged. Two academic libraries have been chosen as representative of the two organizational management styles it is broadly hypothesized that differences do exist and that they manifest themselves in observable ways. Thirty-eight individuals who represent middle managers, their superiors, and their subordinates provide the descriptive data on which the study is based. The results of the study do not support in any definite way the hypothesis that differences exist in the communication pattern of middle managers in the two types of hierarchical environments. Suggestions are made that there may exist other confounding influences--position in the hierarchy, physical location of the manager's unit, degree of participatory environment, individual personalities-- which affect the middle manager position so that differences in the communication pattern, if they exist, are not attributable only to the participative influence.
