Title: Religion and the search for political order in early modern Nimes: The conseil de ville, confessional conflict, and political culture, c.1476--c.1715

Abstract: This dissertation explores the evolving political culture of early modern Nîmes by analyzing the impact of religious reform and royal policies on the operation of the city\'s conseil de ville from 1476 to 1715. It identifies the persistent search by municipal leaders for a centering principle upon which to ground urban administration as the primary characteristic of Nîmes\' political culture during this era. This ongoing quest propelled the conseil de ville through four phases of political activity from the late fifteenth through the early eighteenth centuries. First, civic authorities embraced Christian humanism as the bedrock of consular policy in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. This development provided fertile ground for the growth of Protestantism at Nîmes, a trend culminating with the Calvinist takeover of the city in 1572. The Protestant ascendance enshrined Calvinism as the confessional centering principle for the conseil de ville between 1572 and 1632, when Louis XIII imposed a bipartisan regime on the city. Confessional conflict permeated urban politics from 1632 to 1661, as Protestants and Catholics fought for supremacy in the consulate while contending with a monarchy increasingly intent on managing communal affairs. Urban officials responded to the growing disorder generated by bipartisan municipal governance by adopting Louis XIV\'s absolutism as the foundation for civic administration after 1661. The conseil de ville submitted to the crown to gain the support necessary for imposing order on the community, a decision with several consequences for municipal politics. The rise of absolutism at Nîmes meant the restoration of confessional uniformity in urban politics through the expulsion of the Protestants from the conseil de ville in the late 1670\'s and the shift in power from the consulate to royal agents operating within the local political scene by the 1690\'s.
