Title: First: A history of First African Baptist Church, the oldest continuous Black Baptist Church in North America, 1788--1939

Abstract: This dissertation examines the origins and development of the First African Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia from 1788 to 1939. It explores the meanings and significance of the church to the Black community in Savannah over time. The members and minister of First African Baptist conceived of and employed their church as a tool to resist domination and cultural hegemony. Church membership, doctrine, and rituals helped Black Savannah to construct a shared identity as proud, resilient Baptist people. The ways in which the congregation and its leadership employed the church as a tool of resistance reflected different agendas and class considerations and serve as a window into the complex consciousness of urban Black American Baptists. Their struggles to maintain the autonomy of their church during slavery primed them for and were entwined with their post-Emancipation struggles for political, economic, and social rights. Despite the internal conflicts that convulsed First African Baptist in the 1920s, the church remained an important community institution and helped to create the conditions for the success of the Civil Rights Movement in Savannah. Grounded in a vast array of primary sources, including church minutes, court transcripts, and newspaper articles, this study fills a key vacuum in the historiography of Black American religious history by charting First African Baptist's multi-dimensional, often internally contested, strategies of resistance to racial inequality in Savannah during the transition from slavery to freedom.
