The scope of this study is limited, as much as possible, to those individuals who identified themselves, or were persistently identified by their contemporaries, as Bohemians. The purpose is to understand Bohemianism as an articulation of the artist's sense of social identity without imposing a Marxist social schema on what, in Britain at least, never amounted to anything remotely like the "proletarianization" of the artist. The dissertation begins with an examination of Thackeray's Pendennis , but the focus primarily is on the group of individuals who formed the Savage Club, including most notably George Augustus Sala. The dissertation ends with a look at the literature of Bohemian reminiscence, including the memoirs of G. L. M. Strauss and DuMaurier's Trilby |
