Encompassed in the Diocese of Arequipa, an ecclesiastical jurisdiction created in the early seventeenth century, these ethnic groups and their parish priests engaged in significant accommodations to each other and to the power that the colonial system exerted over them. Parish priests, active participants in the regional economy, needed the help of the native elites to move forward in their careers. Indians, on the other hand, eagerly sought the many advantages of associating themselves with the representatives of the Spanish spiritual power in their villages. |
