Title: God and evil in the gardens of the Andean South: Mid-colonial rural religion in the Diocese of Arequipa

Abstract: This is a study of the religious practices of Indian groups in an important region of the southern Andes, Arequipa, during the mid-colonial period. Encompassed in the Diocese of Arequipa, an ecclesiastical jurisdiction created in the early seventeenth century, these ethnic groups and their parish priests engaged in significant accommodations to each other and to the power that the colonial system exerted over them. Parish priests, active participants in the regional economy, needed the help of the native elites to move forward in their careers. Indians, on the other hand, eagerly sought the many advantages of associating themselves with the representatives of the Spanish spiritual power in their villages.

This research demonstrates that pre-Hispanic cults were indeed very common in the area, despite de fact that the mid-colonial campaigns of extirpation of idolatry organized in the central Andes did not find evidence in Arequipa. The constraints of the local spiritual economy encouraged parish priests and their Indian parishioners to work out relationships based upon a delicate balance of spiritual and material needs. In this sense, allusions to religious misconduct or evangelical incompetence should be understood as rhetorical tools of power negotiation between the parties.

Additionally, this research demonstrates the pervasiveness of Catholicism over surviving pre-Hispanic cults in the area. Conversely, it also shows the use that Indians, displaced from their traditional settings, made of wills and brotherhoods to convey their traditional conceptions about gender-based inheritance, kinship, and ethnic affiliation.
