Title: An evaluation of the characteristics of emigrants from the Hamburg passenger lists, 1860-1880

Abstract: This dissertation examines emigration data from the port of Hamburg from the years 1860-80. The starting point for the organization and analysis of the data is the framework of the utility-maximizing household, in which the potential migrants consider the match of their skills and family status with both the possibilities to be found across the ocean and the means of getting there. The results of this study follow in the path of recent migration work, such as that by Cohn (1995), and offer support for a recent hypothesis (Bojas (1994)) concerning the distribution of occupations among immigrants to these shores. The consideration of the relationship between the occupational distribution and the decision whether or not to bring dependents and the influence of both on the steam or sail choice represents a new contribution.
