It traces the subtle evolution of the idea of republican motherhood as seen in the writings of college founders, novelists, students, clergy, and legislators. It argues that, unlike women's education in the Northeast, women's education in South Carolina remained entrenched in the values and rhetoric of family and community until the end of the nineteenth century. White South Carolina women did not voluntarily step outside of woman's sphere. They were pushed by necessities wrought by the Civil War, and a series of legislative reforms aimed at improving common schools. South Carolina women sought to continue to equate teaching with mothering and resisted moving education out of the shadow of family. |
