Title: AN ON-LINE COMPUTER MANAGED INTRODUCTION TO INDEXING: AN INDIVIDUALIZED MULTI-MEDIA INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE COMPARED TO THE TRADITIONAL METHOD, NINE HOURS OF TEACHER-GROUP CONTACT

Abstract: A systems approach model was used to develop a multi-media instructional package for a three weeks unit on indexing in a graduate library science course. The instructional package consisted of various combinations of media determined by following a curriculum model. The specific media combinations were cassette tapes to guide students at their own pace through introductory lectures and explanations of diagrams, 2 X 2side,s sample indexes, specified index cards, computer-assisted lessons, a programs text and other suggested readings, search exercises with computer and manually searched indexes, a scheduled seminar with the professor, and optional individual as well as small group conferences.
The multimedia instructional package was tested in two experiments. In the first experiment, performance and attitude of students exposed to the traditional, teacher-oriented method (Group I) and to the multimedia method (group II were compared. The multi-media method as used in a second experiment with another group of students, Group III.
After three weeks of instruction, the mean scores of the three groups (one control and two experimental) did not differ significantly in regard to achievement or attitude toward the computer managed method of instruction (CMI). In each group a highly significant relationship was found between library science GPA and achievement. When groups were subdivided at the mean, the differences in attitude toward CMI (pre and post instruction) were consistently related to achievement on the posttest, but directly for experimental and inversely for control groups. In the experimental groups, the number of multi-media lessons not completed accounted for the major portions of the posttest score variance.
Conclusions and recommendations include: choice of method of instruction should be based on something other than achievement on lecture-based examinations. Greater attention should be given to the attitudes and study habits of students since they account for much of the variance in test scores. Students are not handicapped by innovative methods of instruction. More multimedia instructional packages should be developed, possibly as cooperative projects among library schools. More CMI experiments should be conducted, some with subjects that are familiar with computer-assisted instruction and/or tutorial methods. Attitudes of librarians toward technology should be tested in these experiments. Foreign students, academically disadvantaged students, library technicians, and practicing librarians requiring continuing education might be subjects in experiments with multi-media instructional packages.
