Title: In full enjoyment of their liberty: The free women of color of the Gulf ports of New Orleans, Mobile, and Pensacola, 1769-1860

Abstract: Women's Scholars have traditionally viewed the historical experiences of black women in the South through the lens of slavery. In neglecting or rarely mentioning free women of color, such scholars assume that the experiences and identities of free women of color were similar, if not identical, to those of slave women. Indeed, many such scholars would argue that free women of color were so oppressed that their experiences should not be distinguished from those of their slave sisters.

This study of free women of color who shaped their identities within the environment of the colonial and antebellum ports of New Orleans, Mobile, and Pensacola suggests that in denying the specific experiences of free women of color scholars have ignored the many significant ways in which slave and free women of color struggled against and even redefined their oppression. The struggle waged by these women also offers another side to the story of the evolution of slavery and freedom in the colonial and antebellum South.
