While moralists publicly declared mandates of appropriate conduct, gender and sexual narratives that diverged from those dictates appeared in the local newspapers, journals, and theater. The publication of these expressions exposed individuals' explorations of moral and ethnic boundaries that cultural critics sought to concretize. Reports traced fleeting and often times criminal passions, gender and cultural cross-dressers, and personal commitments with humor rather than condemnation. The tales suggested how alternative gender, sexual, and racial imaginations could exist viably during a period more frequently characterized as morally and racially restrictive. I focus particularly on Chinese, Japanese, and Italians within a multi-ethnic context because of their dominant presence in the city's gender, sexual, and racial discourses. As the 1920's approached, the city's public discussion of gender and sexuality diminished. Though individuals continued to act upon their desires, imaginations became less publicly readable. Yet, Race-ing Sex documents how during one window of San Francisco's history, the public press' exposure of unexpected gender, sexual, and ethnic interaction suggested the admissible existence of alternative lifestyles during a time believed to be morally and racially repressive. |
