Title: The last Republican: James Monroe's tours and the politics of succession

Abstract: James Monroe's tours of the United States in 1817 and 1819 reaffirmed political parties, determined presidential succession, launched the Whig and Democratic parties, and revealed that Americans possessed a fierce and contradictory devotion to their nation and its republican government as well as to their region. Monroe did not expect his tours' to generate these political and regional legacies. He sought to liberate the nation from the destabilizing effects of parties and return the government to its republican roots, but the nation looked to the future and opted for parties over principle. His tours resolved the paradoxical status of parties by affirming their place in American politics and by introducing a new generation of politicians to lead these organizations and the nation.
