Monroe did not expect his tours' to generate these political and regional legacies. He sought to liberate the nation from the destabilizing effects of parties and return the government to its republican roots, but the nation looked to the future and opted for parties over principle. His tours resolved the paradoxical status of parties by affirming their place in American politics and by introducing a new generation of politicians to lead these organizations and the nation. |
