Title: Rational womanhood: Lillian M. Gilbreth and the use of psychology in scientific management, 1914-1935

Abstract: This dissertation explores the life work of Lillian M. Gilbreth (1878-1972) as a social scientist in the study of work during the years 1914 to 1935, within that era sometimes known as the Machine Age. As a scientific management consultant, Gilbreth was a key figure in the transformation of work and the reconfiguration of skill in the United States in the twentieth century. She classified both paid employment outside the home, as well as the work done by women in the home, as entitled to a place along the spectrum of productive labor, and as skilled work worthy of study.

While she identified herself as an engineer, Gilbreth's innovations flowed directly from her use of psychology as a framework of reference for her ideas. Her Ph.D. in psychology supplied her with the legitimating credential for her public practice and career. In the context of mechanization, Gilbreth's work explored the "human element," or the notion of the active, working self, and drew heavily on William James's brand of psychology. Social science and the history of its early development must be seen as a defining element of her work.

Lillian Gilbreth's early emergence as a scientific management expert and industrial psychologist distinguished her from other female Progressives. Her combination of home and career, and her embrace of business methods and applications in both public and private life placed her in the forefront of modern womanhood, and formed a bridge between pre- and post-World War I white middle-class female identity.
