None of the wars has ever been systematically compared with either of the others. The work is also an important contribution to the international history of this most critical period. It examines the varying historical developments of the strengths and weaknesses of the national bourgeoisies and the popular groups and classes of each country. It elucidates the volatilities of these processes and how they provided very different fields of operation for the Communist parties which became so central to each civil war. It shows that, because of those different fields of operation, a similar Popular Front policy in each civil war brought on different results. On the pan-European level, the dissertation reveals how each civil war occurred in one of the three successive phases of the 1930s and 1940s power struggle between liberal democracy, fascism and Soviet socialism. It explores the significance of the way that (1) the war in Spain occurred during the phase of the rise of fascism, its appeasement and the Popular Front policy against it, (2) the war in Yugoslavia occurred in the heart of the WWII alliance between liberal capitalism and Soviet Socialism against fascism, and (3) the war in Greece occurred at the outset of the Cold War, when direct conflict resumed between capitalism and Soviet socialism. In a comparative discussion of the combined international and domestic factors in these wars, I conclude by arguing that specific domestic factors carried causal weight that has hitherto remained unappreciated. |
