Title: A passion for action: The political crusades of Louise Weiss, 1915-1938
Abstract: Louise Weiss was a young girl of the upper bourgeoisie, growing up in France during the turn of the century. Intellectually gifted and well educated, she started very young to write for the press, and by the age of twenty eight was editor in chief of l'Europe Nouvelle, a major international journal. She remained involved in foreign--and particularly in European--affairs until the end of her life.
As the title indicates, this dissertation is not a full-fledged biography; instead I focus on the three major political crusades of Louise Weiss before the Second World War: nationhood for Czechoslovakia, the League of Nations and women's suffrage. Weiss was a journalist who loved her profession; she was also concerned about the changing role of the press at a time when historical events seem to foster the increasing influence of newspapers. Louise Weiss belongs to the tragic Generation of 1914 and therefore as I retraced her early life of action, I sought to understand the human factor, and in particular the gender factor which gives her experiences another important dimension.
In 1979, German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt referred to Louise Weiss as "the grandmother of Europe". But this title only alludes to her contribution to the field of French culture and politics, and fails to reflect her passion for action.
