Title: The automobile in the American imagination, 1899-1929

Abstract: This dissertation is a non-functionalist, cultural history of the development of automobility in the United States. It traces the development of velocipede recreation in the nineteenth-century and how this cultural feature was followed by the adoption of the automobile, as the centuries turned. The research makes use of journals, magazines, advertisements, and American novels from which the social milieu of wheeled recreation is reconstructed. Particular attention is paid to women and early automotive technology, particularly electric automobiles.

This dissertation establishes the very early adoption of automobiles by the less privileged social classes and traces the development of motor touring and motor camping.
