Afro-Brazilian mobilization within the context of racial democracy: O movimento negro, 1978-1994 Abstract: Gilberto Freyre, author of the classic The Masters and the Slaves, was the first Brazilian to successfully articulate the Brazilian ideology of racial democracy. Freyre proposed that through the process of miscegenation, Brazil had created a multiracial society free of the racism that plagued the United States. This ideology became an important factor in shaping Brazilian national identity and a mechanism by which thoughts of black mass movements were diffused. The European-Brazilian elite has used racial democracy as an ideology to prevent Afro-Brazilians from fully claiming their African heritage and translating this racial consciousness into some form of political action to better their position in Brazilian society. Without the existence of a healthy Afro-Brazilian identity or the recognition of persisting racial inequalities and discrimination, Afro-Brazilians can never hope to mobilize their community against the realities of racial democracy. |
