Title: Medicine and society in late imperial China: A study of physicians in Suzhou

Abstract: The physicians in Suzhou occupied a world which was the cultural and economic heartland of late imperial China. The domain of medicine within which they operated was closely intertwined with that of the larger society and the web of their activities were shaped as much by the forces of the social and economic realms as by the internal dynamics of medical practice. In my dissertation I show that developments in traditional Chinese medicine in late imperial Jiangnan can only be fully understood when placed within the larger framework of late imperial Chinese history. I argue that the idea of professionalization is useful in looking at these late imperial physicians because there was a growing sense of identity among them, fostered by the webs of connection with the intellectual community and the publishing networks. The influx of elites into the ranks of physicians in late imperial China brought about an effort to renegotiate the boundaries of legitimacy, and attempts were made to demarcate more clearly the lines of inclusion into the group. The developments in the different specializations in medicine was also an important factor in the process of professionalization. I have chosen Suzhou as my focus of study not only because of the impressive assembly of physicians in the area, but also because it was the locus of activities of the physicians central to the development of the wenbing XX (warm factor) theory in medicine. It provides for a unique opportunity to explore the interrelationship between medicine and the economic and cultural developments of the region.
