Title: A Computer-Assisted Instructional Language Which Interacts with the Author
Abstract: This dissertation examines the proposition that a computer-assisted instructional (CAI) language which assists the author in organizing concepts he wishes to teach would remove one' of the major obstacles to the effective use of computers in the instructional process.
In the last 15 years, computers have been used in several different parts of the instructional process and for several different purposes. Part One of this dissertation examines each of .these kinds of applications in order to identify the circumstances under which CAI author languages are used, and to describe precisely how they function . By the late 1960's and early 1970's, it became clear that the use of CAI in U. S. education had fallen far short of earlier predictions , and several studies were undertaken to identify and analyze the responsible factors. Part Two of this dissertation reviews the findings of three such studies to determine what , if any, importance is given to the CAI author's ability to prepare self-instructional materials. Part Three begins by examining a comprehensive model of the process of preparing self-instructional materials, to see which steps in that process lend themselves to computerization. This is followed by a sample authoring session, showing the interaction between an instructor and a program designed to help him organize a CAI program to teach a concept. After the sample, the reader will find a functional specification, in flowchart form, of this concept-formation program, showing all possible paths through the author-system interaction. An examination of the latest and most comprehensive catalog of over 1700 available CAI programs reveals that 94 different author languages were used in writing these programs. This dissertation does not suggest that yet another CAI language is needed; it does suggest that any CAI language would be enhanced' by adding to its capabilities the concept formation author assistance program herein specific. The dissertation concludes with an estimate of the effort required to implement the specified system, and an indication of some needed research into the feasibility of designing a similar system to assist the author's analysis of skills, procedure, and algorithms .
