Title: Drama in education: The process of self-discovery and transformative learning

Abstract: In this qualitative study, my purpose is to come to understand the nature of drama in education (DIE) in a Taiwanese early childhood teacher education course from the perspective of adult learners. The two principal areas of inquiry are: to examine how specifically the learning process occurs in this course; and to show how this learning process affects both pre-service teachers and in-service teachers. Research has demonstrated that we need more theoretical studies on drama in teacher education to ascertain what knowledge and methodologies need to be developed. Furthermore, in the case of Taiwan, DIE is a relatively new concept and its value has yet to be proven in an educational system highly focused on academic competency. Drama by its nature tends to work through a more narrative framework that portrays the transformation of participants, incidents, and thought. Thus, a qualitative inquiry best serves a study involving drama. The fieldwork was conducted in two early childhood teacher education classes in Taiwan. An in-depth interview was conducted with four learners chosen based on observational notes in the field, and their responses to a questionnaire on their backgrounds and prior DIE experience. Even though these four individuals shared a similar experience, their learning stories are very different. This study is like a collage piece. Together, the four individuals co-created a DIE learning story and yet each of them has contributed their own personal story. One learned to think more critically, one experienced emotional involvement, another learned to internalize the DIE experience, and one learned applications of DIE. All the learners came to understand child drama as both a teaching method and a learning medium.
