Title: Examining the efficacy of combining two theoretical positions in explaining change

Abstract: This case study explores the efficacy of existing change models in describing the adoption of a character education program by teachers at one school. The purpose of the study was to explore the efficacy of Rogers' and the CBAM adoption models to that process. The methods of data collection included open-ended interviews, observations, examination of relevant documents and survey questionnaires measuring the perceived attributes of the innovation and current stages of concern. The unit of analysis was the adoption process currently taking place. Following Yin (2004), pattern-matching was the method used to link information from this adoption process to each model.

As a descriptive tool current models were found to be problematic due to their linear nature and inability to capture alterations of the innovation by individual users. The study explores the theoretic utility of integrating critical variables as defined by each model into a hybrid representation and a new descriptive model is suggested.
