SC Western Grebe

Robin Carter and I returned Saturday from two weeks in California, where
we saw many interesting western species, including Western Grebes. (He
spent all the time birding; I spent much of it at a conference.) We were
surprised to find that two of the four messages on our answering machine
were about the appearance of a Western Grebe at Lake Wallace.

So Sunday, rather than spending all day unpacking and doing laundry, we
went to Lake Wallace and had excellent looks at the Western Grebe. When
we arrived (about 2) it was near the end of the peninsula. Over the
next half hour it gradually worked its way towards the marshy end of the
lake and was much more difficult to observe.

We found many of the other birds reported recently from the lake, but
did not locate the eagles and were somewhat disappointed that the black
terns had moved on.
