Hi Carolinabirders,
Well, it sounds like the birding yesterday was pretty spectacular all
around. I just thought I would add that, if anyone in NC recorded better
than 80 species - whether on the NAMC or any other single day in
September - that it would be a new record for the state in this month. I
made a cursory attempt at one last year, but was cut short by an
unenthusiastic partner, and so our mark of 61 species was topped by a guy
from New Jersey who spent half a day on Cape Hatteras and saw 79. Given
that my total yesterday of 71 included not one sparrow, owl or nightjar
and only three shorebirds, four waterfowl, five raptors, and two
seabirds, 80 seems well within reach even inland. Certainly anyone on or
near the coast could break it easily. Can we stand idly by while people
from New Jersey take away our state big day records?
There I go, causing trouble again...
Good birding!
