Hello, this is an October 11 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
WESTERN GREBE

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE
RED CROSSBILL
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
LINCOLN'S SPARROW
NELSON'S SHARP -TAILED SPARROW
COMMON EIDER
The WESTERN GREBE at Lake Wallace near Bennettsville, SC is still being seen.
Look from the peninsula off Rte. 385 along the lake.
A ROSEATE SPOONBILL is still present at Hilton Head, SC. best bet is to look
from the deck of the Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Rte. 278 at high tide.
Check the trees along the bank of the creek there.
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES are established at several spots along the Carolinas'
coasts but inland reports are still very rare. 2 EURASIAN COLLARED- DOVES
have been seen far inland at Conover, NC. For directions and information,
call Dwayne and Lori Martin at 828- 459- 2652.
Birders interested in seeing RED CROSSBILLS in SC should try the Walhalla
Fish Hatchery in Oconee County. Up to 50 birds were present there on 10- 3.
Look in the trees around the trout ponds.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen on Roanoke Is. in NC on October 6. Look
around the parking lot on the north side of US 64/264 just after you cross
onto the island from the mainland. Also present on the island since 10-1 is
a WARBLING VIREO.Call Jeff Lewis at 252- 473- 1086 for information about
birding on Roanoke Island.
Hooper Lane in Henderson County NC has been very productive for rare sparrows
lately. LINCOLN'S, CLAY-COLORED, and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW have all
been reported in the last week. Best spot seems to be the ditch beyond the
gate where an Allied Van Lines van is parked. All of the species mentioned
were seen along the ditch.
A COMMON EIDER was seen at Huntington Beach State Park in SC on 10-8. The
bird was seen on the beach at the base of the south jetty. Despite searches
on 10- 9 and 10-10 the eider was not relocated but the bird was reported from
the same area today 10-11.
Thanks this week to Henry Fuseler, Dwayne and Lori Martin, Jack Peachey, John
Fussell, and Andrew Farnsworth for their calls and reports.
