Dear Carolinabirders,
I just wanted to mention that there are still a handful of openings on a
pelagic trip this Saturday, November 6 from Hatteras, NC aboard the Miss
Hatteras. While this trip was organized in conjunction with the Coastal
Refuge Society's "Wings Over Water" birding festival, interested
parties can register for the trip directly with me. The cost is $85 per
participant. Though we haven't run many pelagic trips at this time of
year that doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile time to go offshore. It
just seems that without an event like the festival that it's hard to
draw enough folks down here in late fall to make a trip. In the few
trips that we've done in November, we've seen Black-capped Petrel,
Cory's Shearwater, Greater Shearwater, Manx Shearwater, Audubon's
Shearwater, Leach's Storm-Petrel, Wilson's Storm-Petrel, Red Phalarope,
Red-necked Phalarope, Pomarine Jaeger, Parasitic Jaeger, and
Black-legged Kittiwake. It would also not be unreasonable to expect
winter seabirds like Northern Fulmar and Great Skua as both have been
seen here off the Outer Banks in October. In fact, I just saw a Great
Skua off Oregon Inlet 12 days ago. It is also possible that we could
find one of the rare Pterodromas such as Trinidade Petrel or Fea's
Petrel on this trip, or something really unexpected like an a albatross.
Anyone wishing to register for this Saturday's trip should contact me
ASAP via e-mail or phone or both. My address is Brian@Patteson.com and
my phone number here in Hatteras is (252) 986-1363. Driving directions
and other information about this and other trips can be found on our
website- http://www.patteson.com/. Our schedule of trips in 2000 is also
posted there, as well as previous trip results and dozens of quality
images of seabirds and cetaceans seen on our trips.
We hope that some of you will join us on these trips.
