On Friday November 5, 1999, over 140 species of birds were identified during
the Wings Over Water Festival in northeastern North Carolina. Spectaculary
fall weather and enthusiastic birders covered areas from Lake Mattamuskeet,
Ocracoke Island, Hatteras Island, Bodie Island, and Bodie Island. Weather
looks great for the Pelagic Trip on Miss Hatteras for Saturday.
A few of the good birds seens on Friday were:
Eurasian Wigeon - North Pond Pea Island
Solitary Sandpiper - Salt Pond, Cape Point
Purple Sandpiper - Salt Pond, Cape Point (flew toward former
lighthouse location groins)
American Tree Sparrow - South Pond (must be on guided trip to enter)
Connecticut Warbler - North Dike, North Pond, Pea Island
Snow Bunting - Bodie Island flyover
Lots of Ducks, Geese, Raptors, Gulls, Terns, and Landbirds.
A small group of birders was going to Mashoes Road near Mann's Harbor to try
and relocate a Northern Saw-whet Owl heard on Thursday night.
There is still plenty of time to come join in the fun. Saturday and Sunday
are loaded with field trips and great opportunities to explore the natural
habitats of the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina.
