Dear All,
Today' s attempt to catch the Selasphorus hummer in Chapel Hill was
unsuccessful. The bird is still in Tom Driscoll's yard (and neighborhood).
It fed from the Pineapple Sage numerous times but was not eager enough for
sugar water to enter my trap and drink from the feeder. I was not at all
surprised given the large patch of flowers available. I even moved over
and sat by the Pineapple Sage in hopes the hummer might then be more likely
to try the feeder with me so close but it was not the case. So I did get
great up close looks of it as well as all the other birds, chipmunks and
squirrels feeding in the Driscoll's lovely yard.
Also, the temperature last night did not drop much (only upper 50s) and
this morning, once the fog burned off, it warmed up in a hurry. It looked
to me as if the hummer was feeding more on insects than nectar starting
just after sunrise.
I plan to return to try again another morning once the weather gets a bit
colder and the sage loses some of its bigger blooms. That will probably be
after Thanksgiving, when the Driscolls have returned. I hope it continues
to hang around. It certainly seemed at ease even with the activity in the
neighborhood today.
