I have spent a few hours last weekend and yesterday birding the Reedy
Creek side of Umstead State Park in Wake Co. I've had a group of 5-10
Pine Siskins each time, plus some Purple Finches last weekend. I had
5-10 Fox Sparrows yesterday, along the dirt road leading to the Reedy
Creek Dam from the Reedy Creek section (coming in from the west through
the tornado-damaged section).
Reedy Creek Lake had about 700 ducks last weekend and maybe 200
yesterday. Most a week ago were Ring-neckeds, but they were mostly
elsewhere on Sunday. Most yesterday were Mallards and Am. Wigeons. The
birds seem very content at the lake, and there is plenty of food --
"aquatic tinsel" (I really can't mention the dreaded "H" word here at
State government, as it is an introduced weed) is abundant.
