The following bird sightings were recorded on Sunday, December 12, 1999.
While leading an Outer Banks birding trip for the North Carolina Nature
Conservancy we found an Ash-throated Flycatcher by the parking area on the
south side of the bridge at Oregon Inlet, Dare County. We observed the bird
at close range for over thirty minutes from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. It never
vocalized. After returning from a walk on the nearby jetty, we could not
relocate the bird. An Ash-throated was reported north of Oregon Inlet at
Bodie Island in November during the Wings Over Water birding festival.
On the way home we stopped at the Alligator River NWR at 12:30 p.m. where
the Rough-legged Hawk had been seen last week, and were able to re-locate
this bird. It was seen flying over the fields adjacent to Milltail Road off
of Highway 64 on mainland Dare County.
We stopped at a location east of Greenville, NC to observe a large flock of
gulls in agricultural fields. We spotted an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull
in the flock. This is the same location (Pactolus, Pitt County) where one
was observed by us last winter.
