For the neck strain I prescribe the Bi-Tote "Eliminator" harness. There's
nothing else quite as good. I obtained my most recent harness from:

You'll have to check to ascertain that the above information is still
current. I have not done so. The harness, itself, bears the telephone
number: (800) 231-1443.
Some months ago, I obtained the Leica Trinovid 10x32BA "mini" binos, and am
MOST PLEASED with them. Having formerly considered my Zeiss 10x42BGAT as my
primary set for ten or more years, the Zeiss has now been supplanted by the
Leica for TWO MAJOR reasons:
1. MUCH closer focussing -- 2.4m (8 ft.) vs. 4.8m (16 ft.) for the Zeiss
2. MUCH better flare suppression when pointing toward sunward. This quality
also contributes significantly to the better contrast overall that I have
experienced with the Leica.
The Leica set is also smaller than the Zeiss (tho not much lighter) and well
armored. The Leicas are now the best binoculars I have EVER used. I have
not found the Leica's smaller objective aperture (32mm vs. 42mm) to be a
significant disadvantage yet. But I imagine that some early dawn or late
dusk birding may make me temporarily revert back to the Zeiss set, or even
the Nikon 7x50s that I always have nearby.
Please do not misunderstand -- I still consider the Zeiss 10x42BGAT among
the best optics I have ever used. However, I now consider the Leica
Trinovid 10x32BA to be significantly better for the reasons described above.
I doubt that I'll sell the Zeiss. I am an "optics horse." Good optics used
long and successfully become as beloved children for me. I have MANY
telescopes and eyepieces, binos, two microscopes, and a score of Canon
cameras and lenses that I have used over the past 35 years and which I'll
prolly never sell. However, you must be aware of the innumerable I *did*
use and sell before settling upon my retained "family." Altho I consider
myself well-satisfied with the optics I have at present, it's entirely
possible that my wallet will become "pregnant" again, and a new "child"
welcomed into the fold after "ten moons' wait." <G>

Subject: Additional Binoculars
My wife and I currently bird with two pair of Zeiss BGAT*P* binoculars.
They serve us well and I can attest to the efficiency of Zeiss lifetime
guarantee, having sent the 10X40 pair back for focus wheel problems
twice and had them satisfactorily repaired at no cost. They are now 11
years old. The 7X42 pair has been flawless. My wife complains about neck
strain and the weight of these bins on long 10 to 12 plus hour birding
days and I would like to have a pair of more compact binoculars for
business travel.
We are currently considering a pair of Zeiss 8X30 BGAT*P*'s but we have
no experience with them or any other 8 power for that matter. We would
be most appreciative to receive direct E-mail comments from our fellow
birders.
Thanks, Buddy
