Cold Outer Banks Birds

Hi all,
I took the bi-weekly grocery shopping trip from Ocracoke Island to Avon
yesterday. Even though we are not buried in snow as many of you are, it is
quite chilly here and this seems to have brought many of our feathered
friends to the roadsides in search of food and water. My driving skills were
thoroughly tested due to the numbers of birds flying across the road in
front of the car and those scratching and darting along the edges of the
road.
The following birds were seen on Rt.12, from Ocracoke to Avon and back, at
the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse ponds, or on the ferry trips across the
Hatteras Inlet.

Eastern Towhee-10
Killdeer-too numerous to count
Mallard-12
