Samworth WMA, 12-8



Hi y'all,
    Miles Phillips (no relation) and I took a ride this afternoon down to
Samworth WMA, located ~20 mi. south of Conway off of US 701. We birded a
woodpile in an old clearcut, the perimeter of one of the "sparrow fields"
and walked to the end of the dike at the Nature Trail. Amongst the zillion
sparrows and half-zillion Am.Robins, we found a few other birds.

Am. Bittern - 1
GB Heron - 1
Great Egret - 3
Snowy Egret - 3
Little Blue Heron - 3 (1 ad., 2 imm.)
White Ibis - 6 (2 ad., 4 imm.)
Wood Duck - 7
Duck sp. - 2 (prolly Black, but kept their identity a mystery by flying out
of the marsh into the sun)
BV - 8
TV - 8
N. Harrier - 1
R-s Hawk - 1 heard (another found dead alongside Hwy 701)
R-t Hawk - 2
Am. Kestrel - 1
N. Bobwhite - 20
King Rail - 1 (heard)
Va. Rail - 2+ (1 excellent, leisurely look from ~15 ft., another heard
farther down the dike)
C. Snipe - 2
M. Dove - 1
GH Owl - 1 (heard almost continually from 4:30 on)
R-b Woodpecker - 3
Y-b Sapsucker - 1
N. Flicker - numerous
E. Phoebe - 2
Empidonax sp. - 1 (Seen from about 20 ft. Appeared to be smaller than
phoebe. pointy-headed, olive above, dull grayish-white below (no yellow that
I could see,) 2 easily-discernable wing bars, no prominent eye-ring.)
Tree Swallow - 8
Blue Jay - few heard intermittently
Am. Crow - 2 heard
Car. Chickadee - a few
Tufted Titmouse - a few
C. Wren - 2 (heard)
Marsh Wren - 1 (heard)
G-c Kinglet - 3
R-c Kinglet - 3
B-g Gnatcatcher - 1
E. Bluebird - 4
Am. Robin - half-zillion
N. Mockingbird - 2
Brown Thrasher - 1
Y-r Warbler - several
Common Yellowthroat - 1 (heard)
N. Cardinal - a few
E. Towhee - 2 (heard)
Chipping Sparrow - 1
Field Sp. - 3
Savannah Sp. - 4
Fox Sparrow - 3 (all alongside dike, 1 singing)
Song Sp. - alot more than quite a few (a number of these singing)
Swamp Sp. - quite a few
White-throated Sp. - almost as many as alot more than quite a few
R-w Blackbird - few hundred
C. Grackle - a few

Also a Barred Owl perched alongside 701 on the way back.
