winter wren

As I was hurriedly walking to class through Coker Arboretum (UNC
campus) this afternoon I heard a persistent kik-kik-kik coming from a
thicket. Repeated pishing flushed out a winter wren which was working
the bushes along the concrete 'wash' that runs through the arboretum.
This was indeed a surprise since the arboretum is a mere stone's throw
from my office and so far i have not seen anything worth a second look
in the garden. This was my first winter wren ever in the triangle area
(i've seen many in the mts. but none down here). Made my day!
Can anyone tell me if they are indeed uncommon down here in the
piedmont, or is it the case that they are quite common but
consistently overlooked?
