The 11th Annual New River CBC was held yesterday under clear but very cold
conditions (+4 degrees at start, mid 20's by late afternoon). At least 16
participants, some not reporting as yet. 59 species, much lower than usual.
Interesting stuff:
imm. Bald Eagle, on the New River SW of Independence, K. Higgins
imm. Golden Eagle, on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Laurel Springs, MP 243-MP
244, J. Keighton
This is the first time we have had both eagles on the count.
Canada Goose, 176 on the River, a new high
Purple Finch, 7, K. Higgins
American Widgeon, 2, J. Coman and L. Ralston
Black Duck, 2, J. Coman and L. Ralston
Woodcock, 1, J. Keighton
Red-Breasted Nuthatch, 1, E. Harrold
Other than the little flock of Purple Finches and the Nuthatch, no winter
finches have arrived.
We have all noticed a lack of all small seedeaters, fructivores, and
blackbirds here since early December. It has been very difficult to locate
juncos and songs, much less field, white-throats, and white-crowns in
usually excellent cover. We only had 3 Swamp Sp. on the count, and no Fox
Sp. No blackbirds except for a little group of 4 Com. Grackles at a feeder.
1 Hermit Thrush, only 3 Robins, NO Cedar Waxwings, which were
super-abundant at Thanksgiving. Also, the first Turkey Vulture seen over my
farm in three weeks showed up for the count, with no others reported.
We are trying to resurrect the long-defunct Grayson Highlands CBC on
Wednesday 27 DEC. If you want to enjoy birding above 5000' in winter,
email compiler Allen Boynton, aboynton@smyth.net.
We will hold the 9th Stone Mountain CBC on Saturday, 30 Dec. This covers
Stone Mountain State Park, SE Alleghany County, Bullhead Mountain, and part
of NE Wilkes County. Elevation range 1200' to 3800' If you want to help
email compiler John MacConnell, jgmac@fastransit.net, or me.
