Lake Wateree CBC

I am proud to announce that there will be a new Christmas Bird Count in
South Carolina this count season. Everything is falling together for the
Lake Wateree CBC, to be held Friday, January 5, 2001. For those interested
in helping with this count, we will meet at the camp store at the Lake
Wateree State Park at 7:00 am. The camp store is at the end of the entrance
road into the park. There will be hot coffee and breakfast snacks for
participants and a countdown supper to be held at a nearby restaurant.
Because of the diversity of habitat to be covered, there is plenty of space
left for volunteers.

The count will cover Lake Wateree itself by boat. For those interested in
the boating party, there are still two seats left for participants having
heavy windproof clothing suitable for riding in an open boat for at least
several hours. Included in the count circle is the Ridgeway Kennecott Gold
mine, now in reclamation. Reclamation at the mine has produced one
excellent 400 acre sparrow field and has opened the undeveloped buffer areas
around the mine for birding. Other areas where we have special permission
to bird for the count include a large private hunt club that has clearcuts,
planted pines, long untimbered shortleaf pine tracts and typical Piedmont
deciduous creekbottom habitat. Other territory to be covered includes the
eastern side of Lake Wateree in Kershaw county, led by a former resident of
the area who maintains ties in the area, and Lake Wateree State Park, which
has a several nice nature trails and an extensive campground that would be
productive to bird.

Directions to Lake Wateree State Park from I-77:

Take Exit 41 (Road #41) off of I-77. Head east (right if you are coming
from the south, left if you are coming from the north) on Road #41.

Go down #41 for 2.6 miles and turn left onto Hwy #21 at the first stop sign.

Go down Hwy #21 for 2.2 miles until you reach Road #101. Turn right. I
think that is the first paved road to the right along that stretch of #21.
There is a sign for the park at this intersection.

The park is approximately 5 miles down Road #101. There are signs along the
way. The park is on the left and well marked, although the turn will sneak
up on you, even when you are looking for it.

For more information, contact me by e-mail at this address or by phone at

Remember, any help is appreciated, even if you can only spare half a day.

Thanks!
