Regarding Rob's question of wintering Western Tanager, there was a female that
wintered in Greenville, NC one or two years ago. The bird was well seen as it
frequented a feeding station with a group of Baltimore Orioles. The beak shape
should be a good clue to separate the two species, tanager-like versus the sharp
bill of the oriole. Western Tanager is rare, but not totally unexpected in the
southeast in winter. I believe Georgia had a male last year. I believe Western
would be the most likely candidate for a wintering tanager in NC.
