Wake waterfowl, Virginia owls

The recent "deep freeze" has put a deep six on the local waterfowl viewing
opportunities. Tracy and I scouted the local waterways (er... ice rinks) today
to try and get a jump start on our year list. The results:

West Lake- frozen
Greenview Pond- frozen
1010 pond- frozen
Yates Mill- partially frozen, Mallards, a few Bufflehead
NCSU dairy- partially frozen, a few Buffleheads and some Canada Geese
Lake Johnson- Wood Duck, coot, Ruddy, Canvasback (79!), Ring-necked Duck (4) and
the local Mallards
Lake Wheeler- 198 Hooded Mergansers! Guess this is where they go when everything
else freezes over. Pied-billed Grebe, Bufflehead, Mallard, Ruddy Duck.

Tracy, Sandy Cash, and I drove to Windmill Point, Virginia yesterday morning to
see if we could locate the Snowy Owl reported from that location. We were
successful in seeing the beautiful, mostly white, visitor from the north. I
even got some decent pics using my digital camera and the spotting scope "lens
to lens".
After leaving the snowy, we drove to a location near the intersection of US15
and I-64 to try and scare up Short-eared Owl. Scare up we did, with 4-5
Short-ears in view at once! We were told that up to 14 have been seen at this
site. Also in the area were a pair of Harriers.

All in all a great way to finish out the year! If anyone would like directions
to the owls, please drop me a note.

Have a safe and happy holiday,
