Yesterday morning on my way in to work, I stopped to open the gate at
the top of the driveway and heard a rustling noise. I looked over to
see a Common Snipe! It was just 6 feet off the side of the drive near
the base of a pine tree and of course began moving away as I was moving
the gate. Cute little bugger who stared at me intently with its dark
eyes. Didn't need binocs to see it clearly, but once out of close view
I did follow with binoculars as it moved through the leaf litter. Very
cool yard bird, but very strange that it would be in a forested area
(although there are little ravines leading down to a creek about 400
feet away).
Also, further on my trip going into town yesterday morning, as I passed
over University Lake I saw a Great Blue Heron about 10 feet from the
bridge off to the right. This bird was standing on the ice in the
middle of the frozen lake. The entire lake was not frozen, however, and
he was facing in the direction of the open water area. Didn't have time
to stop to watch what he was up to, but would it be possible he was
going to try to fish from the ice's edge?
